1946 Wilhelm Pieck Erich Honecker Fritz Selbmann FDJ Bautzen 9 Photos Germany:
$349.00

Rare historical lot of 9 original photographs documenting the 1st East Saxon Youth Day (1. Ostsächsischer Jugendtag) of the Free German Youth / FDJ, held in Bautzen, Saxony, Germany, in August 1946.

The photographs are contemporary originals from the event, and several are inscribed on the reverse:

“18.8.1946 Bautzen.”

The group provides a remarkable photographic record of an important early FDJ mass gathering in the Soviet Occupation Zone of Germany, only a little more than a year after the end of World War II and three years before the establishment of the German Democratic Republic.

Of particular historical importance, the photographs depict Wilhelm Pieck, Fritz Selbmann and Erich Honecker at the event.

Wilhelm Pieck is shown at the speakers' platform and is specifically identified by an original contemporary handwritten inscription on the reverse of one photograph.

Fritz Selbmann is shown prominently at the platform wearing his distinctive white suit. Contemporary identified photographs taken at the same Bautzen event show Selbmann in the same clothing and setting.

Erich Honecker is also present at the speakers' platform, wearing his distinctive clothing with a large white open collar, as documented in contemporary identified photographs from the same event.

The series shows the political leaders from several different viewpoints, together with the decorated platform, microphones and other participants.

A huge FDJ emblem forms the backdrop of the speakers' platform.

Across the front of the platform is the inscription:

“Die Stadtverwaltung Bautzen grüßt die Jugend zum 1. Ostsächsischen Jugendtag.”

Approximately translated:

“The Bautzen City Administration greets the youth on the occasion of the 1st East Saxon Youth Day.”

One photograph carries an especially important handwritten contemporary description on its reverse, dated August 18, 1946, Bautzen, identifying the appearance / speech of Wilhelm Pieck at the gathering.

In addition to the close views of the political leaders, the collection includes impressive documentary photographs of the mass procession and enormous crowds filling the streets of Bautzen.

The images show FDJ Flags and banners, marching participants, spectators, political slogans, the decorated speakers' platform and densely packed crowds, providing an unusually detailed visual record of the event.

One crowd photograph prominently shows an anti-war banner containing the word “Krieg!”, while other photographs capture the impressive scale of the gathering from elevated viewpoints.

All 9 photographs belong together and document the same precisely dated historical event, rather than being a group of unrelated political photographs.

Historical context:

Wilhelm Pieck was one of the leading figures of the newly formed Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and later became the first and only President of the German Democratic Republic.

Fritz Selbmann was an important German communist politician who later held senior economic and government positions in East Germany.

Erich Honecker was a leading figure in the early Free German Youth (FDJ) and later became one of the most important political leaders of the German Democratic Republic / East Germany.

Together, the photographs provide an unusually direct visual connection between the early postwar FDJ movement and three important figures in the subsequent political history of East Germany.
