I believe this is 1 of the rarest swords ever presented by the IJA during the WW2 era. The blade is a Koa Isshin Mantetsu forged and dated Spring 1939.
The koshirae is in very fine condition. all parts marked with matching numbers (#169 ) The Southern Manchurian RR logo is stamped into the ashi .
There is a article on this presentation tachi which states it was given to those personnel who served 25 years. (Ohmura-study. n et) Personally I do not know if that means only Japanese personnel received one or J and Chinese could have been beneficiaries ?
I'm sure this is not the only one in existence but since 1973 it is the only one I have seen outside the one pictured in Jim Dawson's Book Swords of Imperial Japan 1868-1945 . It is owned by a collector in the UK. Before you say it's only a Manchurian blade - yes, that's true, but the koshirae is what makes it rare . Same as the Senior Manchurian dirk I sold for 5 digits - had a plain plated blade , same as any ol Naval dirk but the "koshirae" makes it super super rare.
I am certainly willing to listen to offers but my asking price is such that I doubt many want to inquire. If anyone has some sale results please let me know. I truly believe this is one of the prizes of the WW2 Military edged weapon collector.
I have owned this since late 70's and came from a veteran in Peoria , Ill. Would be the cream /highlight of your WW2 Japanese edged weapon collection and bragging rights too !
