Intricate Extraordinary Workmanship

Rarity and Exclusivity

Ca 15th Century

For your consideration, this very fine and unique Europen late Middle Ages hand made silver Reliquary.

Medieval Reliquaries, often crafted from silver, were designed to hold and display relics- objects or remains associated with a Saint or religious figure.

Reliquaries became very important in Medieval Christianity serving as focal points for veneration, pilgrimage and displays of devotion.

The frontside of the Reliquary depicts the Christ Child bone crafted with impeccable detail. The Altar is surrounded by circular compartments, each containing a relic - fragment or bone, cloth or dust- carefully set into a beige textile background and bordered with gilded filigree scrollwork.

Each relic is identified by a miniature handwritten label with Latin inscriptions written in black ink on rolled paper. Among the Saints , we can recognize: St Sophia, St Thomas, St Julian and St Rita of Cascia. There´s a fifth unidentified Saint.

On the other side of the Reliquary, we can see a hand painted icon of the Mother of God depicted with a sword going through her heart.

The image of the pierced heart is often associated with the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which is a symbol of her purity, love and sorrowful compassion. It emphasizes her deep connection to her Son´s suffering and her shared experience of pain and sorrow.

The image of the Virgin Mary is surrounded by four engraved Potent or Jerusalem Crosses which probably refers to a depiction found on an encolpion. The encolpion features the Mother of God and the Four Evangelists ( Matthew, Mark, Luke and John).

Use of Jerusalem Cross is associated with a number of Royal Houses in Europe in the late medieval period, notably the Kings of Naples, Kings of Aragon in Spain and the Habsburg Emperors of Austria.
