Let's compare this Error/Mis-manufactured SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #189 with the BLACK (non-Foil-Enhanced/Error) VENOM LETHAL PROTECTOR #1...

We were in business when that book came out (we've been operating in San Antonio, Texas since 1987, home of Venom Artist/Inker: Sam dela Rosa) and when we received our order of Venom Lethal Protector #1, we received 9 "mis-printed/mis-manufactured" BLACK-INK-INSTEAD-OF-RED-FOIL copies. We were upset back then, because nobody would buy them (Who knew what they'd be worth in 2022?!).

A recent review of the CGC Census revealed that nearly 300 copies of the "BLACK VENOM #1" have already been slabbed, with 2x 10.0, 1x 9.9, & 83x 9.8 grades awarded! And, there are HUNDREDS of RAW COPIES sitting in collections.

In FEBRUARY 2021 a CGC 9.8 was purchased (according to GPANALYSIS.com) for $5,500. NOW, FOLKS ON ARE ASKING FOR AS MUCH AS $20,000 FOR A similar CGC-9.8 COPY!! Remember, this is a book with a CGC'd population of nearly 300, including 3 in a higher grade!

When questioned directly, CGC explained their policy regarding labeling of comics with printing errors, and it's a bit quirky....

"IF a mis-manufactured comic has a "significant population/quantity" (no minimum number officially defined) of a certain issue with a SPECIFIC printing or manufacturing error, CGC will arbitrarily decide to call it a "planned error" (versus one that slipped past inspectors), awarding all similar books with a UNIVERSAL BLUE LABEL. However.........

A truly UNIQUE and AUTHENTICATED Issue (such as this copy of Spectacular Spider-Man #189 with only THREE KNOWN SPECIMENS) will be given a QUALIFIED GREEN LABEL, and be denoted as "Manufactured with an Error" - which, in this book's case, states: "MANUFACTURED WITHOUT SILVER HOLOGRAM."
