Vintage Carousel
- USED - In Need of Restoration
- In language, this would be "For Parts" but that's not a condition option in this category
- Last known function and inspection was at the now-defunct Enchanted Forest in Hopkinton, Rhode Island. It appears to have been sold at sale and I bought it out of a 20' storage container from a modern Amusements business that never got around to restoring it
- My plan is to begin restoring it and to put it to use until someone buys it, as the restoration begins, the price will go up and I will update the listing with new photos and details. Buy it now if you want to save some $$ and have your own fun project!
- If you are checking this out just b/c you love old Carousels, and you have any photos or info about this specific one and how it looked at the Enchanted Forest or another location, please feel free to message me a photo - I'm having trouble finding any and would be quite grateful.
- All 20 horses are here - Aluminum edition
- TWO HORSES have one broken hoof each - this has been filled and painted at least once (see detail photo, both are similar)
- ALL stirrup and rein attachment points are present - no leather, no stirrups - reins are simple clothesline rope that'll just be removed when it's time to work on these
- I did a lead swab on a paint chip from a brown horse - the outer layer was negative, the inside layer was positive. THIS HAS CHIPPING LEAD PAINT. You will need to take appropriate precautions when moving and restoring. (Horses are bagged in storage, so things are contained now)
- The Hearts are deteriorating, there's enough there to get an idea of what they looked like, many have significant chips and chunks missing (I'm not sure if they are original anyway)
- The Mirrors are pretty much all broken.
- The Chariots are likely not original, in good condition
- The Floor is definitely not the original wood
- MISSING CANOPY - there is NO COVERING at all - I'm not even sure yet if the structure to hold the 'big top' is fully present
- The major gears and hubs all look good and are heavily greased so rust shouldn't be an issue
- The motor has not yet been tested, appears to be a more modern and common 1/2HP device fitted with the proper gear to engage the base
- NO ELECTRICAL - for modern operation you will need to wire in an emergency stop switch in addition to the basic wiring required (115V 20A circuit) for the motor - I am not sure yet if it will brake when power is cut off or if a ride of this low height and speed requires an emergency brake as well (this likely varies from state-to-state, so check your own)
- Curved Facings look to be in good shape, obviously in need of care but the frames and overall look is solid
- I did not fully inventory the poles, up/down riding gears, or other struts yet. It was sold to me under the presumption that they are complete, but with some fittings in need of replacement and straightening of poles here and there. When loading/unloading I did not notice any obvious parts in need of welding or serious reworking
- Carousel or Merry Go Round - yeah there's a difference, but in the internet world of searching, I'm making sure both terms are used here!
- Approximately 20' Diameter, but this was figured using a rough measure of a single floor panel outer measurement
WORK STARTED:
- All 20 horses inspected and catalogued - see above, only issues obvious are the two broken hooves
- All 20 horses have had a light round of paint-chip removal - no chemicals or abrasives applied, just a hard rubbing with leather gloves to remove the worst of the curled and loose paint while I did an initial inspection, bagging, and cataloging (I took a photo of each horse, PM me if you'd like to see any up-close - thumbnails added to this main listing)
- THIS IS NOT PLUG-AND-PLAY- do not buy this thinking you'll set it up in the backyard for a birthday party next week!
- SHIPPING: This fit easily in what Uhaul calls a 15' truck (it's really 12' with a 3' overhang) and this is what you see in a couple of the photos
- LOCAL PICKUP is the preferred method and you are welcome to visit and check it out yourself before you commit to buying.
- SHIPPING Message me BEFORE you buy if you want this delivered. I can help figure out what can be done. You should assume a cost of about $100 + $3.50/mile from zip code 01370
- Payment: I am open to methods which may work for your business or non-profit - this can include visiting the local branch of your bank to authenticate a bank check or verifying a wire transfer prior to loading
- Listing marked "private" to enable restoration specialists, donors, or others to buy discreetly
