An original rare and important quarter plate tintype from the late 1870s to early 1880s measuring approximately 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches depicting J. N. W. Otto, German American New Orleans druggist and apothecary, a “Deutsche Apotheke” (German pharmacy), which was at the corner of Rampart St and Gravier St. The address was 76 S. Rampart St. The Historic New Orleans Collection provides information on this pharmacy as well as bill head examples as included as references in the listed photos. The last listed photo is reversed for visual review.

Estimated to be between the late 1870s to 1882 given the New Orleans City Rail Road changed its name to the New Orleans City and Lake Rail Road in 1883. The track can be seen in the photo. This is likely the Esplanade Line which opened on June 1, 1861, and originally known as the Rampart and Esplanade Line. The earlier horse-drawn streetcars had a "bobtail design" as depicted here which required getting on and off only at the rear of the car.

African Americans are also depicted and likely were employed here given German immigrants were far less likely discriminate based on race and were known to hire African Americans in their businesses such as general stores, specialty stores, and barbershops.
