This listing is for a miniature 1927 Bezalel miniature silver Megillah Case & Esther Scroll from the Purim story of Mordechai & Esther plus the original presentation box in which this came. This was designed by Ze'ev Raban. This was given as a gift the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts to its members. Bezalel was founded in 1906 by Boris Schatz. The Megillah case measures 4 1/8" tall x 7/8" across at its widest.
The case is decorated in the center with an image of Esther kneeling at the feet of King Ahasuerus and the Hebrew quote from Megillat Esther Chapter 2 Verse 2 "ותגע בראש השרביט", which translates in English to "touched the end of the scepter". Just above the illustration it says in Hebrew "מבצלאל לחבריו תרפ״ז" or in English "From Bezalel to Its Members 5687". Below the illustration it says in English "MEMBERSHIP IN BEZALEL". On either side of the illustration appear the words in Hebrew "" and "", which in English are "Megillah" and "Esther". At the top and bottom of the main section of the case is matching filigree work.
On the back side is a pull tab for taking out the scroll. On the tab it is marked in Hebrew "בצלאל ירושלם", which translates to "BEZALEL JERUSALEM", and in English "MADE IN JERUSALM". The scroll is printed in ink and illustrated in color with scenes from the Purim story. The scroll measures 1 1/8" tall. The top and bottom part both move for rolling the scroll back in to its case.
This 97-year Bezalel Megillah Case and Scroll are in wonderful antique condition. The top knob has a very small ding but I see know other flaws to this unique item. Please see the photos for more detail.
The fabric-lined presentation box measures 5 1/4" x 1 5/8" x 1 1/2". It is marked at the top in Hebrew "" and in English "BEZALEL JERUSALEM" although the letters are partially worn off. The latch on the front works to close the box but the hinge is a little lose in the back.
