This is an incredibly rare unrestored neoclassical oil on panel from the late 18th-early 19th Century. This Salvatore Mundi is on a 12.5x10.5 inch wood panel. The panel is in unrestored condition with no splitting or through cracks. It has both original period correct straps running both the top and bottom of the panel. These are also correct for late 18th century neoclassical wood panels. This wood panel itself is remarkable in that it has never been broken and repaired. This painting is in the manner of Ingres. There are almost no visible brush marks in a very intact original oil painting. There is no restoration to the painting. Something almost unheard of for a painting of this age.This painting early in the 19th Century was converted to an Icon. The halo is not original but a very old addition. Along with what was likely a highly decorative oclad that was crudely removed long ago. There are still remnants of real silver nails imbedded in the painting. The removal of the alterations occurred over a century ago. The history of this panel exists unrestored. From original varnish and brush work the original painting is identifiably different from the added halo and metal work added after the fact. The age of the alterations show their great age as does the age of it being stripped of the additions.This is an expertly painted panel. Even with its damage it is still a beautiful image in untouched original condition from the period. It’s style, manner and technique are French neoclassical and its construction is correct for that period.I bought the painting out of Lithuania as an icon. But this is a neoclassical oil on panel.This is also the type of painting for collectors with the ability to consult research professionals. I do not have any supporting documentation with this painting. My information comes from examination by conservation professionals but I pursued no scientific examination with this painting (X-RAY, XRF, IRF, etc.). But a good conservation professional will be able to confirm what this panel is and the nature of its condition. This is a chance to own a unrestored original neoclassical panel. You just don’t find unrestored/unrepaired panels of this age available. If you have any questions please let me know.
