For sale is a medal group comprising: The Most ExcellentOrder of the British Empire, C.B.E. (Military) Commander's 2nd Type neck Badge,silver-gilt and enamel; Distinguished Service Order, G.V.R., silver-gilt andenamel, top riband bar adapted for mounting; Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 5clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, SouthAfrica 1902 impressed named Lieut. A. J. H. Sloggett. Rifle: Bde:, the last twoclasps contemporary tailor's copies; 1914 Star, copy clasp impressed named Capt:A. J. H. Sloggett. Rif: Brig.; British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oakleaves impressed named Lt. Col. A. J. H. Sloggett.; Defence Medal 1939-45;Delhi Durbar 1911, both unnamed as issued. Court mounted for display they havebeen lacquered at some stage.; A bound photograph album, the cover embossed'Malta 1906. A.J.H.S.', spine loose. The album is mainly of the Malta garrison days.They come with copies medal rolls, MIC, London Gazettes and newspaper articles.

Colonel Arthur John Henry Sloggett CBE, DSO, was born on 4/5/1882,the only son of Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Sloggett, K.C.B.,K.C.M.G.,K.C.V.O. Sir Arthur was the Director General of the British MedicalServices for the Great War. He was also the Honorary Surgeon to the King.

Arthur John Henry was educated at Harrow and the RoyalMilitary College Sandhurst, he was commissioned into the 1st Battalion, RifleBrigade on 13/3/1901 and served with them in the Boer War. He transferred tothe 2nd Battalion in 1911 and served with that Battalion in France from 2November 1914. He was a Staff Captain 1915-16, G.S.O. 3 1916, and Brigade Major1916-17. He then commanded the 7th Battalion in France in 1917, being awardedhis D.S.O. and earning a 'mention' (London Gazette 21/12/1917, refers) in theprocess.

The 7th Battalion was destroyed when they were on thereceiving end of the German “Michael” offensive on 21/3/1918. The War Diaryrecords 'The enemy opened a heavy drum fire bombardment at 4 am, a considerableamount of gas shells being used. From that time onwards no furthercommunication was received from the forward zone. Runners were unable to getthrough the barrage.'. He was taken prisoner by the Germans on that date.

The next day the battalion only numbered 4 officers and 100other ranks; these were composed of shoemakers, tailors, pioneers, storemen,and the remnants of the battalion. On 27/4/1918 it was reduced to a cadrestrength and basically ceased to exist as a fighting unit.

At the conclusion of the war he volunteered to assist with therepatriation of his fellow POWS and subsequently did not return to Englandhimself until 19/1/1919 whereupon he was posted to the 5th Battalion. Heretired to Devon in 1924.

During WW2 he became the Commanding Officer of the 10thDevon (Torbay) Battalion, Devon Home Guard during the Second World War andCounty Commandant of the Army Cadet Force and played a significant part in itspost war reconstruction.

Appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Devon, he was appointedC.B.E. in 1949 for his work in the Cadet Force. Sloggett was a fine racquetsplayer, winning the Racquet Championship in Poona and becoming army singleschampion in 1920. He was also a fine all round cricketer. Colonel Sloggett diedat his residence at Paignton, Devon, on 13 December 1950.
