During the rise of Nazi Germany, Albert Einstein used his international prominence & personal influence to help Jewish refugees escape persecution & find safety abroad in the United States. After fleeing Germany himself in 1933, Einstein became an outspoken opponent of the Nazi regime & assisted individuals by providing affidavits & monetary support for families.
This extraordinary example is a 1940 document that has been boldly signed by Albert Einstein and represents a deeply personal chapter in his life. The affidavit was prepared in support of Einstein’s distant cousin, Ursula Einstein, who had fled Nazi Germany and was seeking permission to immigrate to the United States from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In the document, Einstein identifies himself as a Professor of Physics and member of the faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, while pledging his financial resources to help support her immigration.
The affidavit provides a remarkable snapshot of Einstein’s personal circumstances at the time, listing his annual earnings and substantial assets, including bank funds, real estate, and stocks and bonds. It also records Ursula Einstein’s intention to immigrate because of the “unfavorable political conditions” in her country of birth - the story of those fleeing Nazi persecution. Countersigned by a notary public and bears a red notary seal. The document is PSA authenticated and encapsulated (9.5x13”) with a PSA NM-MT 8 auto grade and includes a PSA Letter of Authenticity.
