Written entirely in formal Latin on a single sheet of vellum or parchment measuring approximately 10 by 6.25 inches, the document opens with the traditional formula Omnibus Christi Fidelibus and explicitly empowers Cawdor as Elgins factor, actor, attornatus seu procurator in matters in praesenti Parlamento. It is boldly signed Elgin at lower right and retains Elgins original applied red wax seal at the foot, preserving the instrument in fully executed form.
