BIOGRAPHY: Christian Abraham Fleetwood (1840 – 1914), was an African Americanofficer in the United States Army, the D.C. National Guard, an editor, a musician, and a government official.He was one of the first African Americans to receive the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration, for his extraordinary valor during the American Civil War. Beyond his wartime heroism, Fleetwood dedicated his life to breaking down institutional racial barriers and preserving the legacy of Black soldiers. He is considered by many to be the most important African American military leader of the 19th Century.
