19th-C French Orientalist Japonisme Louis XV Clock Signed Stoneware Pagoda 17”:

This listing is for a very rare French Orientalist Japonisme Louis XV gilt bronze mounted clock, set in the tower of a beautifully potted pagoda. The finely chased dial with a central white enamel plate surrounded by Roman hour numerals within shaped enamel cartouches, and a fine pair of steel hands for the hours and minutes; dating to circa 1830s, Paris. The handcrafted stoneware pagoda features a distinctive style of architecture. Characterized by a tiled roof and a minimalistic aesthetic, with double doors below that appear to lead to a sanctuary; this design reflects Japan’s rich cultural and architectural traditions. Around the lower border is hand painted artwork of a storm-tossed sea; with a large, cresting wave forming a spiral, reminiscent of the renowned painting, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa”, by Hokusai. This work is signed on the lower left rear by the artist. Most certainly one of a kind. Measuring about 17” high x 9” diameter x 5.5” deep, this old piece is intact with blemishes; all shown in the photos. On the front, there are two hairline fissures, one lower left and the other on the lower right. There is a chip on the right end of the veranda. On the back there are chips at either end of the veranda and one on the right side of the roof. The clock pendulum is included in the sale. We do not have the key. We do not know if the clock works.
