The first Yamato no Kami Yasushi's home country was Echizen, where he is said to have been a disciple of the first Yasitsugu, and recent research has shown that he is likely to have come from the Kishu Sekido school.

He moved to Edo and lived in Kanda Shirogane-cho, and his stable swords were known for their excellent sharpness, and many of his swords were named by Kaemon Yamano and Kanjuro Yamano. It is known to have been the personal sword of Souji Okita, the commander of the Shinsengumi's first division, and Kuwajiro Oishi, a fellow member of the Shinsengumi.

Even today, it continues to be popular as the epitome of the sharp, simple, and sturdy samurai sword.

In recent years, he has become even more famous as a character appearing in Touken Ranbu.
