FIRST MISSIONARY TO PUERTO RICO!

Letter written by Missionary Hugo P. McCormick, Southern Baptist missionary to Zacatecas, Mexico in the 1880s/90s.

Then in 1899, he became the first missionary to Puerto Rico, serving with the American Baptists.

He may have had a part in helping to found the University of Puerto Rico.

Hugo P. McCormick has the distinguished record as serving as Puerto Rico's first evangelical missionary starting in 1899 after the Spanish-American War, planting Baptist churches in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Prior to service on the island, he served as a missionary in Zacatecas, Mexico, planting churches and helping to set up Christian schools as well.

This specific letter pertains to his ministry in Zacatecas, Mexico (1880s/1890s), where the mission work had progressed and they were ready to purchase church property for the ministry, for the price of $8,000. He is writing to W.D. Powell, the Secretary of the Sunday School Convention of Texas Baptists.

Here is the letter itself:

"Dear Bro. Powell,

This morning the gov. sec'y sent me word that the large ch. which we - you remember entering, is for sale. Says he has been offered $8,000 but will wait for my offer. That is dirt cheap--the [stove bin?] won't cost that. Have not yet been able well to examine it, will do so tomorrow when I can have the keys. Be ready if Dr. Tappin says so to come over--I do not know enough about Spanish to treat to advantage. Shall write you fully as soon as I can find out anything positive. Do you want to go to raise the money? I must have a church--this is in the best part of the city, on the same square from my present room.
