Bio
Adrien Étienne Gaudez(2 February 1845 – 23 January 1902) was a French sculptor who worked in the 19th century. He produced several monumental figures that were cast in bronze. Gaudez studied sculpture under the tutelage ofFrancois Jouffroyat theÉcole des Beaux-Artsand in 1870 was aprisoner of warduring theFranco-Prussian War.
Life and career[edit]

Gaudez was born inLyon, France, on 2 February 1845. He was a pupil ofFrancois Jouffroyat theÉcole des Beaux-Artsin Paris in 1862. He made his debut at theParis Salonin 1864.[1]Gaudez worked almost exclusively inbronzeand he produced a wide array of sculptures, ranging fromgenre subjectsto military and patriotic themes.[2]His earlier work was mostly of aclassicalnature[3]but in the latter part of his career he produced some sculpture that can be categorized asart nouveau.

Prisoner of war[edit]

He was aprisoner of warin theFranco-Prussian Warin 1870. Having first-hand knowledge of the war, he executed a statue in memory of the French prisoners held inMagdeburgby the Prussian forces. The statue was erected in the city's cemetery.[1]He participated in the Paris Salon of 1878 with the plaster sculpture titledJupiter's Childhood.

In Greek mythology, Acteon was the sonof the herdsman Aristaeus and Autonoe, anda Theban hero, and fallen by Artemis.

Death and legacy[edit]

Gaudez died inNeuilly-sur-Seine, France, on 23 January 1902. He is best known for his monumental sculptures.
