Ronald Reaganwas an American politician who served as the 40thpresident of the United Statesfrom 1981 to 1989. Prior to his presidency, he was aHollywoodactor before serving as the 33rdgovernor of California1967 to 1975.Ronald Reagan was raised in a poor family in small towns in Illinois. After moving to California in 1937, he found work as an actor and starred in a few productions including Knute Rockne All American, Bedtime for Bonzo, and The Killers. He was twice elected President of theScreen Actors Guild—the labor union for actors—where he worked to seek out and nameCommunists. In the 1950's, he moved into television and was a motivational speaker for the General Electric Corporation. When the Medicare legislationwas introduced in 1961, he publicly saidthat such a program would mean the end of freedom in America.HesupportedBarry Goldwater'spresidential campaign and won national attention as a spokesman. He waselectedgovernor of California in 1966, raised taxes, and turned a state budget deficit to a surplus, rebuked protests at theUniversity of California subsequently ordering in the National Guard in1969, and urged the Board of Regents at UCLA to fire Professor Angela Davis for allegedly being affiliated with the Communist Party. In 1967, Reagan signed the Mulford Act, which repealed a law that allowed public carrying of loaded firearms. He twice ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination, in1968 and 1976. Four years later in1980, he won the nomination and assumed the presidency.Soon after taking office, he incorporated neo-liberal supply-side economic policies, dubbed "Reaganomics", and cut taxes on the upper bracket of the rich from 70% to 30%. He advocated for economic deregulation, and reduction in government spending. He began the "War on Drugs," andfought against public sector labor unions. Heenacted cuts in domestic spending, and increased military spending. He cut budgets for medicaid, food stamps, and federal education programs.Foreign affairs dominated his second term, including thebombing of Libya, theIran-Iraq War, and was involved in the Iran-Contra affair. He described the Soviet Union as an "evil Empire" and his administration worked to undermine and end the Soviet Union, in part by escalating the arms race with the USSR. During his presidency GDP rose impressively though working and middle classes lost ground. After his service in office he becameicon amongconservatives and right wing politicos and voters, though those on both sides of the major party isles, as well as leaders of other countries, both friendly an and in disagreement with United States, found Ronald Reagan to be a likable person. He was married twice, first to actress Jane Wyman, then to actress Nancy Davis, then Nancy Reagan who became First Lady of the United States.
