Walthambanjo clocks follow the styling originated by Simon Willard some 100 yearsearlier. They are known for theirsophistication and styling along with an advanced movement design. This clock, circa 1930, is a rare example composed with a Cherry case and commemorativeLiberty Bell and Independence Hall reverse painted tablets. The production statisticsindicate this combination occurred in much less than 1% of all the Walthambanjo clocks manufactured over the period of 25-years. The case is marked ‘13’on the head. It is most likely that the wood was cut and assembled in a buildlot of 15-20 units. How many Cherry cases were completed and sold is unknown, but not many given the extra cost. Total estimated production of thiscombination was likely only a single clock and had to have been made to acustom order just before Waltham Watch Co. ceased banjo clock manufacturing. Thecase is of the Model 1543 style, composed of twisted brass wire rope on thesides of the tablet frames, brass balls on the pediment, and a large eaglefinial. All the brass trim has been polishedand finished with a clear lacquer top coat.
Thecondition of this clock is near perfect. Many coats of clear shellac wereapplied until all pores were filled.Thefinal finish was done with a modified French polish to produce a finish havingdepth, clarity, and a buttery smooth surface. The Cherry coloration gives a soft and warm feeling that contrasts withthe usual dark Mahogany finish commonly seen, or the less often seen, Walnutmid-toned finish. The tablets are ingreat condition with only some minor adhesion blemishes on the throattablet.Paired with the tablets andpolished brass ornaments this clock is truly eye catching. The movement incorporatesa Geneva wind limiter, maintaining power on the great gear, and using thickplates ensures long life. The pivots have been polished and bushings installedas needed. Maintaining power ensures the clock continues to run during the timethe clock is being wound, a feature few banjo clocks incorporated. The H-tabbedpendulum rod / bob combination provides a safe way to move or ship the clock asthe bob can be easily lifted off the rod. This is a highly desirable solutionto preventing damage to the lower tablet painting.
