When I woke up to the news that Robert Bedford had died in his sleep,It took me back many years. It was about 1987. I was living in Taos, New Mexico in my Adobe house, high atop a hill with my graceful saluki dogs, Farouk and Mirage.I was a silversmith. I made Concho Belts that I took to Santa Fe and sold to the galleries and directly to the Santa Domingo Indians, who set up on the plaza, selling their legendary bead necklaces. They bought my belts for themselves. That was the biggest compliment ever!The Hotel El Dorado in Santa Fe had just been built. It was beautiful and majestic. They had a jewelry store and in the window of the lobby was my Thunderbird Concho Belt and my Arrowhead Bolo tie.Robert Redford was staying there with Sonia Braga. It was right after they had made the Milagro Beanfield Wars.Sonia saw my bolo in the window so they went in and purchased it. The owner immediately called me to tell me and asked me to make another one which I did. He said that Robert and Sonia were lovely people.Mr. Redford told them that he admired my work!How sweet! T’was a long time ago.Bless him and his family.Who knew I’d end up making belts for him at Sundance few years later.

DID YOU KNOW...Turquoiseis ancient, yet again and again it finds itself back in fashion. Itsshining sky blue is one of the most popular trend colors in the worldof fashion. In many cultures of the Old and NewWorlds, this gemstone has been esteemed for thousands of years. Theoldest evidence for this claim was found in Egypt, where gravefurnishings with turquoise inlay were discovered, dating fromapproximately 3000 B.C. Turquoise is a copper aluminum phosphate with ahardness of 6, i.e. considerably softer than quartz. In Nature, itoccurs in the whole range of hues from sky blue to grey-green, and it ismostly found in places where there is a high concentration of copper inthe soil.

Theblue colour is created by copper, the green by bivalent iron and acertain amount of chrome. Often, the material has veins running through it, which are brown, light grey or black depending onwhere it was found. These lively, more or less regular patterns areknown as 'turquoise matrix'. The crystals are microscopically small andcan hardly ever be recognized with the naked eye. As a rule, turquoiseoccurs as a filling in veins or crevices, or in the form of nuggets.
