Provenance:

Our sister, Margaret Kung-Ting Liu, the third child among five

siblings, was born in Berlin, on December 17, 1932. At that time, our

father, Wen-tao Liu, was serving as the Chinese minister to

Germany and Austria, in the early years of Hitler’s reign. After that

post, our father served as ambassador to Mussolini’s Italy, where

Robert was born. As with our entire family, the Sino-Japanese war

which spread worldwide into World War II and the following

Communist Revolution in China deeply affected us. As a

consequence, these wars split the family and resulted in my Mother

and the children becoming immigrants in the United States in 1946.

Margaret graduated in 1954 from Bryn Mawr College with a BA

in chemistry and worked in medical research, including at the

National Institutes of Health (NIH), until 1972 on various projects,

including ape viruses, co-authoring a number of papers on this topic

and Vitamen B12 uptake. In 1972, she received her M.A. in English

Literature from George Washington University, in Washington,

D.C. Having had only one year of schooling in China during the

second grade due to the Japanese occupation, Margaret still became

a professor in Chinese language and English Literature at Northern

Virginia Community College in Alexandria, VA, being in the same

English Department as Jill offeren. Her school served students from

160 countries. Hardly another college professor could boast of being

an ex-chemist teaching Shakespeare in English and Chinese in

Chinese. She retired in 2000.

Margaret Liu was a Native speaker in Chinese and English,

proficient in German and French, somewhat in Latin, due to the

various schools she attended during the war years, including the

Kaiser Wilhem schools in China. As with all our family, including

my late Mother, we were all good in art, as drawing required few

resources in wartime and Margaret often also tutored Robert in

science courses during college. She was extremely supportive of

Ornament Magazine, run by Robert, his late wife Carolyn and

Patrick Benesh-Liu, and staff, and was a wonderful sister to us,

generous and kind.

She was an excellent pianist and played the harpsichord.

Margaret and her partner Timmy Marx, also a Bryn Mawr graduate

and professor, collected Native American art, and enjoyed music,

Western art, cooking, good food and traveling. A portion of their

Inuit collection was donated to Bryn Mawr College. Marx developed

MS, and preceded Margaret’s passing in June, 2021 by six years.

During the 1960s, possibly earlier, Margaret and many of the Liu

family would travel to the Southwest each summer, stopping off in

Gallup, Santa Fe and other Southwest cities, visiting trading posts

and galleries carrying Native American art. During her long career

as a professor, she and Marx would continue collectiing, often from

prominent dealers, amassing a large collection of baskets, pots,

sculpture (including Inuit carvings), jewelry and books on Native

American art.
