Photo of Benito Mussolini with entourage taken by myfather, Victor Perantoni, in the courtyard of our 'Winiarnia Italia Wine andPasta Tavern' at 29 Ulica Sykstuska, Lwow / Leopoli, Poland. Today's address is 29 Ulica Doroshenka, Lviv,Ukraine. The building and courtyardstill exist amid thriving business storefronts, as they did when my grandfather, Carlo Perantoni, had them in 1929.

Victor Perantoni shot the photograph in May 1929 withhis new Zeiss Ikonta camera, which his father, Carlo Perantoni, had given him for hiseighteenth birthday some weeks earlier.Victor arranged the chairs, mounted his Zeiss camera on a tripod, andaimed it for the photo. Then he seated the guests of honor, and he lined up the standing guests. After setting the camera's auto-shutter for the photo shoot, he quickly centered himself behind the group next to Italy's fascist Flag. The Flag has the vice-consulate's bannermarked LEOPOLI. Victor is standing on awine crate. He's not as tall as he seemsin the photo.

Benito Mussolini is seated 3rd from the left, next toCarlo Perantoni on the right. Carlowas the Honorary Vice-Consul of Italian Affairs for Eastern Poland since1920. In late 1922, after Mussolini'sMarch on Rome, the office was renamed Honorary Vice-Consul of Fascist Affairsfor East Poland.

In 2011, a narrative about the day of Mussolini'svisit and the photo shoot was published in our family story, 'Arrivederci Leopolis.' Later, in 2015, it was re-publishedas an adapted screenplay titled 'The War of Lions.' It received three awards in MonteCarlo, Monaco, and Milano, Italy (2015-2016).Today, it's in preparation as a five-part TV mini-series, drawing on facts anddetails about how Joseph Stalin betrayed Poland in 1945.

Unpublished until 2007, the photograph's 'Visual Material Copyright' was registered with the United States Copyright Office as an "Unpublished Photograph,"establishing a 70-year copyright that began in 2007 to last until 2077. Subsequently, the photo was first publishedin October 2007 on our family website.It's a 1929 photo in very good condition. It is unsigned / no autographs / the photo atelier's name is embossed.
