PRESIDENT ADAMS CONVENES SENATE TO FOR THE INAUGURATION OF HIS POLITICAL FOE, ANDREW JACKSON

Sixth President of the United States, JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, exceedingly rare and historically significant letter signed as President to Senator Asher Robbins of Rhode Island, formally summoning him to aspecial session of the United States Senate the day that saw John Quincy Adams leave presidential office in favor of his bitter rival, Andrew Jackson. Adams famously refused to attend the Inauguration ceremony.

“Certain matters touching the Public Good, requiring that the Senate of the United States should be convened on Wednesday, the fourth day of March next, you are desired to attend at the Senate Chamber, in the City of Washington, on that day; then & there to receive and deliberate on such communications as shall be made to you…”

John Quincy Adams had originally sought to bring Andrew Jackson onto his ticket as vice president. However, the two men became fierce rivals during the presidential election of 1824. Although Jackson won the most popular and Electoral College votes, he did not secure a majority. As a result, the decision went to the House of Representatives, which chose Adams as president. Jackson denounced the outcome as a “corrupt bargain,” believing a backroom deal had been struck between Adams and Henry Clay. The rivalry culminated in a rematch in 1828, where Jackson soundly defeated Adams and won the presidency.

The letter was written in preparation for Adams’ impending departure from the White House and Jackson’s inauguration on March 4, 1829, the date the Senate was to convene. In February, Jackson snubbed Adams, refusing to make the customary call on the president at the White House, resenting his political enemies whoseacrimonious accusations he blamed for the death of his wife in December 1828. Adams offered to leave the White House early so Jackson could move in, but the president-elect declined. With enmity building on both sides, Adams decided to boycott Jackson’s inauguration on March 4, leaving aconspicuouslyvacant chair at the official Inauguration ceremony.
