It was a branch of the English bank, The London Bank of Mexico and South America, Ltd., with a capital of two and a half million pesos. The bank commenced operations on August 1, 1864, during the reign of Emperor Maximilian of Austria and the presidency of Benito Jurez. Its headquarters were located on Capuchinas Street corner with Lerdo in Mexico City. Don William Newbold, the founder and initial manager of the Bank of London and Mexico, arrived in Mexico alongside Robert Geddes with the intention of establishing a branch in the country. Newbold successfully negotiated favorable conditions for their settlement, securing the exclusive right to operate as the sole foreign bank in Mexico. Recognizing the importance of fostering a national character for the banks operations, its staff embarked on an extensive network of agencies across the country, which later evolved into branches.
