For your consideration is an exceptionally rare and historically significant royal Svres porcelain dinner plate made for King Louis-Philippe I of France (r. 18301848) and dated 1831, at the beginning of the July Monarchy. Measuring approximately 9.5 inches in diameter, the plate is formed in fine white hard-paste porcelain with a restrained gilt rim and, at the center, the Kings crowned LP royal cipher finely executed in gold. The elegant simplicity of the design is characteristic of official royal household porcelain and gives the plate a particularly formal and courtly appearance.
The underside bears the period crowned LP Svres factory mark with S.V. 31, confirming manufacture at the royal Svres manufactory in 1831. This early date is especially significant, falling only months after Louis-Philippes accession as King of the French in August 1830 and placing the plate among the earliest porcelain produced under his royal cipher. The surviving marks confirm that this is an authentic Louis-Philippe-period Svres royal service plate rather than a later reproduction or commemorative piece.
Louis-Philippes reign marked a distinctive chapter in French royal material culture, combining the traditions of the Bourbon court with the more restrained public image of the so-called Citizen-King.
