The Soviet–Japanese War(in legal documents: War with Japan [ 15 ] , in the Soviet press and documentaries - " Far Eastern Campaign ", " Manchurian Campaign " [ 16 ] [ 17 ] ) was an armed conflict in August – September 1945 (officially - from August 12 to September 2 [ 15 ] ) between the Soviet Union and Mongolia , on one side, and the Empire of Japan and Manchukuo , on the other. The entry of the USSR as a belligerent into the four-year-long Allied War with the Empire of Japan was determined by the agreement at the Yalta Summit of leaders in February 1945 [ 18 ] .

As a result of the rapid offensive of the Soviet-Mongolian troops in Manchuria, the entire main group of the Kwantung Army was defeated in a short period of time, from August 9 to 22, 1945. Northeast China and the north of the Korean Peninsula (now the territory of North Korea ) were liberated . Soviet troops occupied South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands (during the South Sakhalin and Kuril landing operations, respectively) [ 19 ] . The losses of the Japanese and Manchukuo troops amounted to about 84,000 people killed and about 640,000 captured [ 20 ] . The losses of the Soviet troops in the war with Japan amounted to 12,031 people - irretrievable and 24,425 people - sanitary [ 21 ] .

On September 2, the Instrument of Surrender of Japan was signed , which also marked the end of World War II , but the official end date of the Soviet-Japanese War is September 3 [ 15 ] , despite the fact that some Japanese garrisons on the Kuril Islands continued to resist until September 5 [ 22 ] .
