It was common practice durning the 18th and 19th centuries for Scottish Presbyterian pastors to interview parishioners before reception of communion. Not only was the parishioner to keep ther conscience clean, but the pastor, as as the one responsible for the care of his flock was to ensure their hands were free of guilt of indulging the celebration of the Lord's Supper unwortherly. Once the interview was completed the token was issued and then reliquished as the communion was recieved.
This is an amazing collection of 1017 various communion tokens. Some Rare Ones !
