This object comes from a long-held private collection formed over decades of collecting. The seller has been an member since 2015 as a buyer and only recently began releasing selected pieces, including this one.

One of Francis Frith’s most important Holy Land photographs, depicting the Convent of Mar Saba dramatically embedded within the cliffs of the Kidron Valley in the Judean Desert.

Photographed during Frith’s 1857 Middle East expedition, this image captures the monastery not as a picturesque ruin but as a living monastic stronghold, emphasizing isolation, ascetic endurance, and architectural continuity stretching back to Late Antiquity. The stepped stone structures, domed chapel, bell arch, and narrow passageways are rendered with exceptional clarity, while the surrounding canyon reinforces the monastery’s deliberate separation from the secular world.

This composition is widely regarded as a masterwork within Frith’s Holy Land corpus, combining technical difficulty, geographic remoteness, and deep religious significance. The image occupies a special position in the visual history of Eastern Christian monasticism, documenting one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in the world.

The print bears Frith’s signature in the negative and period titling beneath the image:
“54. CONVENT OF MAR SABA.”
Additional period inscriptions referencing Frith and the 1857 expedition are present on the mount.

Historical significance

Founded in the 5th century, Mar Saba became a defining center of Orthodox monastic life in the Holy Land. By the mid-19th century, it remained largely inaccessible to outsiders, making Frith’s photograph an extraordinary early visual document of monastic life, architecture, and geography before modern intervention.

Within Frith’s oeuvre, this image stands alongside his most ambitious architectural and religious subjects and is frequently cited as one of his most resolved and conceptually powerful Holy Land views.
