The TGK-3 (Kerosine Thermogenerator, Model 3) is a unique Soviet device, produced since the 1950s, for generating electricity from the heat of a standard "Molniya" kerosene lamp. It was designed to provide autonomous power for vacuum tube radios (such as the "Rodina-47," "Rodina-52," "Iskra," and "Tallinn B-2") in rural and remote areas without electricity. Operating Principle: The device operates on the Seebeck effect (thermoelectricity). When the junction of two different semiconductor materials (thermocouples) is heated by the flame of a kerosene lamp and the opposite ends are simultaneously cooled by air through a massive metal radiator, an electric current is generated. Technical specifications Parameter Value Output power ~3 W Filament power line 2 V at 0.5 A (or tap 1.2 V at 0.36 A) Anode power line 2 V at 2 A (supplied to a vibration transducer to increase to ~120 V) Fuel consumption (kerosene) 60–70 grams per hour Operating time on one fill up to 8 hours of continuous operation Efficiency (COP) About 2–3% Design features Double benefit: TGK-3 was used as an attachment to a lamp. It simultaneously illuminated the room and powered the radio receiver without requiring separate fuel consumption for current generation. Battery design: Consisted of two independent thermoelectric batteries made of antimony, zinc, and constantan alloys. Cooling: Stable operation was ensured by an advanced air radiator with vertical fins. Unlike earlier models, the TGK-3 did not require a constant supply of boiling water for cooling.
