RARE Philip & Kelvin LaVerne Persephone Enslaved Sculpted Coffee Table MCM:
$21000.00

RARE and IMPORTANT Philip & Kelvin LaVerne "Persephone Enslaved" Sculpted Coffee Table Mid Century Modern Brutalist. This is truly an unbelievable estate find! The MCM style coffee table is rare, with only THREE in the edition created by father and son duo, Philip, and Kelvin LaVerne. The table is a patinated bronze sculpture of "Persephone Enslaved." Persephone is the goddess of spring growth. The table measures approximately 36" long x 24" deep x 18" high, and the glass top is 3/4" thick. The glass is sculpted and follows exactly the contours of the base of the table. The base is in excellent condition, as is the glass, which has a few very miniscule scratches. The base weighs 78# while the glass weighs 38#. The base is inscribed Philip and Kelvin LaVerne.

"Persephone Enslaved" 1969- the model was cast in an edition of only three. This important table was used as the 1969 New York Times Magazine ads for the Laverne Studios- Literature: Sculpture bronze and Pewter tables, The Art of Phillip Laverne, Laverne gallery catalogue, n.d., pl. 33. Born in 1907 in New York, NY, Philip Laverne went on to study under the Ashcan School painter John Sloan at the Art Students League of New York. Kelvin Laverne was born in 1936 in New York, NY; he majored in metal sculpting and furniture design at the Parsons School of Design. In the mid-1950s, father and son began experimenting to create their first pieces. Philip focused on the materials and decorative elements, while Kelvin laid out the larger forms and functional designs. Though Philip Laverne died in 1987, his son continues to produce works under both their names as a testament to the legacy of their collaborative project. This bronze sculpted masterpiece is magnificent, so rare, and can only appreciate in value. Thank you for looking.
