Wonderful iconic framed and matted, signed photograph byGrace Robertson (1930-2021) from the Mother’s Day Off series c. 1956 featuring a group of Britishriding on the Caterpillar,dressed for a day out. Thisgelatin silver print photograph is signed in ink lower right, and markedMargate1956 lower left. Sight measures 10"x 14 3/4", and the frame measures 16 1/4" x 20 1/4". InExcellent vintage condition,minor scratching to the plexiglass, as shown. Photo not examined outside of frame.

‘GraceRobertson (1930 – 2021) was a pioneering photographer and observerof British life, who championed the lives and work of womenthroughout her career. She began working as aphotographer in the 1940s, a time when the profession was usuallyreserved for men.

TheMother's Day Off Series, captured in 1954, depicts a group of womentraveling from a pub in Bermondsey, London to the seaside resort ofMargate in Kent. Robertson spent three days in the women's company,drinking at their local pub, in order to gain their trust. The methodworked, Robertson gained an intimate insight into the women's livesand their tight-knit community. Robertson described the series asher 'most enjoyable' – the photographs revel in the women'sunselfconscious, joyous celebrations – singing, drinking andentertaining. However, there was also a sense that this community wasdisappearing, and Robertson wanted to preserve it with her lens. In1956 the story was commissioned by Life magazine, cementing theseries' fame internationally.’
