For sale isa very rare small tea pot with its original lid made by Chantilly in the 1730s . The lid and main body are made of soft paste porcelain with a tin glaze (to make it appear whiter to be closer to the milky white porcelain from the Arita area in Japan ) and hand painted using their famous and amazing enamel colors. The piece is hand painted in the Japanese Kakiemon palette colors with silver mounts. Both pieces have an all around scene including two herons / cranes as well as some typical flowers common to porcelain of this style. The lid has three cute little flower designs to it. Silver mounts on the lid edge, a silver finial that is connected with a tiny chain to the handle as well as to a cover for the spout. The porcelain from this maker and period is as good as it gets for me - nothing better really out there. The piece is in amazing condition with the lid having a tight very hard to spot hairline to the center as shown that does not go through to either side. The handle has a firing flaw to the side where it touched something during the firing process and the spout has a firing flaw where it attaches to the body also original to the piece. A little bit of wear to one heron as shown. The silver mounts have oxidized over time and could use a polishing though I like it the way it is. The chain linking the handle and the lid has broken but that would be an easy fix! All in all something very special that one rarely if ever gets to see outside of museums. The pot and lid are 3.5 inches tall, 5.625 inches from spout to handle and about 3.5 inches in diameter. The piece is unmarked underneath which is fairly normal on their early wares.
