    BOOK DETAILS: Title Page

THE ORACLES SIBYLLINS, OR THE FOLLOWING OF PROPHETIC MEMORIES, adorned with engravings. By Miss M. A. Le Normand, author of the Sibyl at the Tomb of Louis XVI. Paris, Author's Place, rue de Tournon, No. 5 Bookshop, Ru du Petit-Lion, S. Sulpice, No. 1, 1817

    BOOK DESCRIPTIONS:

    • Nativity, science of the numbers of the economy, magic mirrors, onnymancie, scyomantia, or evocation of shadows, palmistry, onomancie, the genies of physiognomy, oomantite, melted lead, coscinomancy, ophioman, tie, onytomantie, talisman, oenistitice, a note on Caglostro of the greatest rarity, Sibylline oracles or the sequence of prophetic memories.

    ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

    • Mlle. Le Normand’s fame rests on the fact that she was the author of 14 best selling books, in which she described her career and her dealings with her famous clients. Her clients included Marat, Robespierre, Czar Alexander, and most famously the Empress Josephine. Le Normand is credited with predicting the rise and the fall of Napoleon.

    FACTS:

    • She was a member of a secret society in London, called Members of Mercurii

    • Lenormand had a shingle as a bookseller and Etteilla as a mathematician - this was for the purposes of officialdom. On paper, these were their census occupations.

    • Divination was not well respected during the decades after the French Revolution.

    FACTS:

    • The Sibylline Oracles are a heterogeneous collection of fourteen oracles, of various epochs and of unknown authors. Although they are versified in Greek, these texts are part of the tradition of anti-Roman, Jewish or Judeo-Christian apocalyptic discourse.

    • Some relate ancient historical events. Thus, the thirteenth oracle devotes 60 verses out of 173 to evoke the reign of the emperor Philip the Arab.

    • The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, at the end of the first century, quotes an extract from Book III concerning the Tower of Babel. The Christian apologist Athenagoras of Athens, in his Supplication on the Christians addressed to the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (176), quotes the same passage verbatim, while apologizing that this text is certainly already well known to the 'emperor.

    • The Fathers of the Church frequently refer to the oracles of the sibyls: Theophilus of Antioch (about the year 180), Clement of Alexandria (about the year 200), Lactance (about 305 BC), and Saint- Augustin (ca. 400) seem very familiar with the pseudo-sibylline writings, which they quote or paraphrase, inserting here and there "son of God." Some fragments have survived only through the quotations of the Fathers of the Church.

    • However, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, "... the decline and disappearance of paganism made them lose importance and they were less and less read and copied, although they were known and cited throughout the Middle Ages, in the East as in the West
