Chief Looking Glass of the Nez Perce, Ceremonial Pipe. A priceless artifact of the Looking Glass band of the Nez Perce Tribe. This piece of history has been inour family's care since the summer of 1877. Great Grandfather John Alonso Miller was commissioned by the United States government to come to Idaho, in the spring of 1864, to be an interpreter for Chief Looking Glass (the younger) of the Nez Perce. He lived between Mt. Idaho and Jerry Washington with this Nez Perce bands. They summered near Mt.Idaho and wintered at Jerry Washington,which is at the base of Cloverland grade on Asotin creek.When reading the book Nez Perce Summer 1877: The U.S. Army and the Nez Perce crisis, By Jerome A. Greene. In chapter 3 (Looking Glass's camp and Cottonwood)it tells how the attack on the Looking Glass camp happened and that an Interpreter J.A. Miller was present. The attack happened so quickly and so early in the morning that the Nez Perce were driven away leaving most all of their belongings. J.A. Miller saved some of Looking Glass's possessions andafter Looking Glass was killed in the Nez Perce war of 1877,held on to them and thenlaterhanded them down to hisson Madison EarlMiller, and thenMadison to his son Charles P Miller, and then Charles tohis family.We, the heirsof the Miller family have treasured thisartifact for 4 generationsor 140 years.Now it's time to let it go, hopefully to a museum, so more can see it.
