India General Service Medal (1895), with 2 clasps PUNJAB FRONTIER 1897 – 98, TIRAH 1897 – 98, period engraved 3669 Pte J Stoodley 1st Bn Devon Regt.; Queens South Africa Medal, with 3 clasps, ELANDSLAAGTE, DEFENCE OF LADYSMITH, BELFAST, impressed named 3669 PTE J. STOODLEY, DEVON: REGT; Kings South Africa Medal (1902), with 2 clasps, SOUTH AFRICA 1901, SOUTH AFRICA 1902, impressed named3669 PTE J. STOODLEY. DEVON: REGT Court mounted for display and comes with copies of service papers, medal rolls, Regiment history extracts and the original ribbon bar and ribbons.

Joseph Churchill Stoodley was born in October 1873 at Hawkechurch, Dorset. A labourer by trade he enlisted into the Devonshire Regiment on 3/2/1893 at Devon.

He was posted to the 1st Battalion on 19/10/1894. He served with the Battalion in India from the 26/9/1894 – 20/9/1899. During his service he qualified for the India General Service Medal with clasps Punjab Frontier 1897 0 98 & Tirah 1897 – 98.

During the Boer War, he deployed with the Battalion to South Africa where he served from 21/9/18799 – 11/10/1902. The battalion had a good reputation during the war being involved in the Battle of Elandslaagte, where the Battalion made the final bayonet charge, and was highly praised for their actions at Ladysmith when they used the bayonet again. He transferred to the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment on 11/2/1902.

He returned to England with the Battalion on 12/10/1902, serving until 31/1/1905 when he discharged time expired (12 years).

The 1911 census records him living Devon working as a labourer on an estate. He died in April 1921.
