United States Food Administration document signed by Herbert Hoover in 1919. Comes with eight pages of military documents dated from 1918 and 1919, both during and after World War I
Document signed "Herbert Hoover" as United States Food Administrator. Brown ink notations in bottom left corner in unknown hand. 1 page, 8¼x11¾. With seals in bottom corners and 2x2½ b/w photo affixed in bottom left corner. July 7, 1919. Hoover signed this document to certify that Charles Nodder was traveling on behalf of the U. S. Food Administration. Lightly toned, foxed and soiled and creased. Photo is lightly silvered. Folded once vertically and thrice horizontally and unfolded. Pinhole where folds meet. Light nicks in right and left edges along folds. Folds are worn. Light pinholes where folds meet. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Eight pages of military documents belonging to Nodder, dated 1918 and 1919, both during and after World War I. These include documents promoting Nodder from Second to First Lieutenant of infantry, a postcard from the War Department notifying him of his Selective Service class, a vaccination register, an insurance application for the Bureau of War Risk Insurance at the Treasury Department and a 1919 Italian-language document authorizing him to travel from Trieste, Itlay to Fiume, Italy (now Rijeka, Croatia) and return. Lightly toned, soiled, stained and creased. Handwriting and signatures have bled and smeared lightly in places but are legible. Missing corners. Some documents were folded. Tears along folds. Hoover (1874-1964, born in West Branch, Iowa), a mining engineer and self-made millionaire, served as the 31st U.S. President from 1929 to1933. Blamed by many voters for the Great Depression, he was defeated in his offer for re-election by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Hoover, a capable administrator, had headed the Food Administration to provide relief to Europe and Russia during and after WWI and served as Secretary of Commerce under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge (1921-1928). The second President to attain the age of 90 years (John Adams was the first), Hoover lived a record 31 years after leaving the presidency. During his "retirement", he was appointed to commissions to oversee government agencies by Presidents Harry S. Truman (1947) and Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953).
