Item Description

Here is a nice colored rendering of Betsy Ross creating the first American Flag with George Washington and others at her home observing for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep for yourself!

This fine piece of artwork is being offered to you at a price below what you would see in a high end sale house or gallery. We have been selling fine items out of our home for over 35 years. We are therefore better positioned to control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the higher end sale houses and galleries pass on to their clients.

Offered here is a nice antique chromolithograph of the first US Flag being created by Betsy Ross. The rendering is very well done. The piece is based upon a painting originally done by C H Weisgerber. The piece was done as a gift provided to members of a club that raised funds to keep the Betsty Ross house in Philadelphia from being lost.

From the Library of Congress example; Includes statement printed at bottom: The first American Flag accepted by Committee and adopted by Resolution of Congress June 14th 1777, as the National Standard was made by Betsy Ross in 1776 at 239 Arch Street, Philadelphia in the room represented in this picture. The Committee, Robert Morris and Hon. George Ross, accompanied by General George Washington called upon this Celebrated Woman and together with her suggestions produced our beautiful Emblem of Liberty.
Presented to George Washington Henderson, Baltimore, MD [inscribed in ink] by the American Flag House and Betsy Ross Memorial Association for aiding in the preservation of the Birthplace of Our Nation's Flag and for the erection of a National Memorial in honor of Betsy Ross.
- Original painting now in the collections of the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, PA.
- This print was created as a souvenir for people forming a fund-raising club to save the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia.

One of the better examples of this engraving we have come across in our over 35 years of collecting and dealing. In better condition than the one shown on the Library of Congress site! Original painting was done in 1893. Cannot make out the copyright year on the piece with where the star impression has been made. Has an impressed star in the lower right corner is numbered "60". Each piece was given a different number to each member of the fund raising club. Interesting ribbed texture to the paper the image is captured on.

Minor spotting on the engraving. Some waviness in the piece, just needs to be pressed flat again.. A small water mark near the lower right corner. See pics.

The engraving has not been examined out of the frame. A couple of imperfections to the engraving in the border, not in plate area itself. See pics. We see no tears or repairs to the engraving.

The old wood frame shows some wear and tear from time, but still has a lot of elegance to it. Nice golden brown color to the frame. Corners are separating and need some tightening attention. Nice impressed detailing around all four sides of the frame in two areas. Chipping to the frame around the edges. Has 2 older wood pieces for the backer. No backing paper.Glass is intact over the piece, no cracks or blistering to the glass.

The Birth of Our Nation's Flag Chromolithograph including the frame is 27-5/8" tall, by 32" across, by 2" wide. The engraving showing thru the frame is 21.5" tall by 26-1/8" across.
