William Frederick ''Buffalo Bill' Cody [1846 1917] was a American scout, bison hunter and showman who was born in the Le Claire Iowa Territory later known as the U.S state of Iowa. Cody began working at the age of 14 as a rider for the Pony Express and served with the Union Army during the American Civil War. Cody received the nickname ''Buffalo Bill'' after the American Civil War when he had a contract to supply Kansas Pacific Railroad workers with buffalo meat and it is purported he killed over 4,000 buffalo between 1867 and 1868. After the war he served as a civilian scout for the U.S Army during the Indian Wars and was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1872. Cody is considered one of the most colorful figures of the American Old West and Bill's legend began to spread when he was only twenty-three when he began performing in shows that displayed cowboy themes and episodes from the frontier and Indian Wars. In 1883 he founded the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and began touring the United States and in 1887 he toured in Great Britain and Europe. Listed for sale is a stunning display which contains an outstanding authenticated [ALS] autograph letter signed by William Frederick ''Buffalo Bill'' Cody. The letter is written on his personal business letterhead ''Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders'' which contains his printed image. The letter is dated Charles City, Kas Aug 16th 1900, the letter is address to a Mrs. Paralt, it references an invitation for a performance and his reply is curt, in short, ''My Dear Mrs Paralt. Thanks for your favor - but I do not care to play that xxx for free. The letter is signed ''Yours very truly W.F. Cody'' and he added below ''My show business is big'' in black fountain pen. The letter is also signed on the verso as follows ''Col Cody August 16th/1900''. The display contains an opening on the back of the display to show the additional signature. The letter measures 8.25 x 9.25 inches, other then expected mail folds the letter is in fine condition with bold writing and a attractive and desirable letterhead. The letter has been authenticated by JSA, James Spence Authentication and will be accompanied with the above Letter of Authenticity. The display has been assembled around a wonderful 8.00 x 10.00 color image of Buffalo Bill on his horse. Mounted below is a professionally engraved plaque which reads as follows, ''William Frederick ''Buffalo Bill'' Cody. February 26, 1846 - January 10, 1917. One of the most colorful figures of the American Old West, his legend began to spread when he was only twenty-three. Shortly thereafter he started performing in shows that displayed cowboy themes and episodes from the frontier and Indian Wars. He founded Buffalo Bill's Wild West in 1883, taking his large company on tours in the United States and beginning in 1887, in Great Britain and Europe. The display itself is stunning and has been professionally assembled in acid free materials as follows, each item has been triple matted in a beige linen outer matte and accented with a gold and a black and inner matte. It has been mounted in a quality ornate distressed brown/black wood frame to the dimensions of 26.00 x 22.00 inches. The letter is a wonderful example, signed twice, authenticated, signed on a desirable letterhead, beautifully framed and ready to be displayed in your collection. Absolutely no disappointments.
