Theextraordinary and very large Tonalácharger or platter features thevery finest painting in this pottery type with a multi-colored exoticbird with wings outstretched and long flowing tail set amidst twolarge colorful flowers, chains of smaller flowers, tendrils, andleaves. The wonderful colors used and the highly-detailed and complexbrushwork is truly impressive in this piece.It is marked on the back with MEXICO impressed in an oval and has a sturdy hanger built into the pottery for display.Its very large size (24" across) and the original hanger built into the back makes this ideal for wall display.

This style of Mexicanpottery was developed by a highly-skilled group of potters andpainters inTonalá, Jalisco, Mexicofrom the 1920's-50's during the profound new Mexican ArtRenaissance, typified by the Mexican Muralists, the surge of American tourism, as well as a strong demand for decorativeobjects that would suit the new architectural style in the US knownas Spanish Colonial Revival, particularly in California and the Southwest. This large beautifulpiece is among the best of its type and is in excellent undamagedcondition. Condition: Excellent. No cracks, chips. There is very minor wear overall, asexpected with age and use (see photos).
