For sale is an absolutely amazing Antique clock crafted in the refined Louis XVI style traditional form and notable for its intricate and extensive decoration. A satyr face is the prominent central focal point on this wonderful and rare cartel clock while winged, beaked creatures flank the sides of the piece as if guarding time itself. The central circular enamel dial is set within a gilt bronze (ormolu) case, which is further decorated with swirling acanthus leaf scrolls and floral garlands.

Please note that the original clock mechanism had already been replaced with a battery operated clock mechanism when we purchased the piece at an Estate Sale, so we are selling the clock specifically for the beautiful gold gilt housing and hand painted face. At the time of purchase we were advised that the clock was a family heirloom that was purchased decades ago while the grandparents were traveling through France, but was now being sold as it did not fit the mid-century modern taste of the younger generations. No specific information regarding the exact age was readily available.

The clock is in lovely Antique condition with the expected light wear for its age including as a few small hairline cracks on the clock faceplate dial particularly between some of the numerals. Please examine all photographs prior to purchase.

The Louis XVI style takes his name from the last French monarch before the revolution - Louis XVI himself (1754-1793). The Louis XVI Neoclassical forms were inspired by the Classical Art and Architecture of Ancient Greece and Rome, which was considered to embody the perfection of harmonious forms. In particular, mythological representations of 17th and 18th Century works were immensely popular and continue to be highly collectible.
