This is a monumental and historicAntique Old WPA Catholic Icon Religious Church Fresco Oil or Tempera Painting on canvas, which was once housed in an old Catholic church in Los Angeles, California. This artwork depicts what I believe to be Saint Peter, in red Cardinal style robes, placing his hand upon a poor fellow who is kneeling before him. To the left of the scene, several figures are witnessing the interaction and conversing with each other. In the distance, a desert landscape and a sparse tree line can be seen. This artwork likely dates to the 1920's - 1930's, and I suspect it is by the hand of an American WPA painter. WPA artisans created numerous Catholic fresco paintings and murals in the Los Angeles area during this time. Perhaps you recognize the artist or their work? Approximately 43 1/4 x 71 inches. This artwork appears to have been relined onto a newer canvas backing and mounted on a wooden support frame.This restoration work was probably done in the 1960's - 1970's based on the materials and patina.Good condition for decades of age and devotional use, with expected craquelure, scuffing, minor paint loss, light soiling, and edge wear (please see photos.) Acquired from an old private collection in Los Angeles, California. The deceased owner's daughter told me that it came from a Catholic church in Los Angeles that was being demolished decades ago.
