Vintage original authentic pair of approximately cyanotypes by Edward Sheriff Curtis. The first cyanotype measures approximately 4.0" x 5.75" and is an image of the Curtis crew (including a figure some believe to be Curtis) in a vessel about to embark on the Klamath River with a second vessel attached. The second cyanotype measures approximately 5.75" x 7.875" and is an image of what appears to be the aforementioned vessel with Wishram coming ashore and a member of the Curtis crew onshore in the background. A variant of the second image was published in the North American Indian on page 114 of Volume 8. What's interesting to note is a case of equipment evident along the right edge of the image in the second cyanotype was apparently left sitting on a rock when the published image was taken and was retouched to appear more like the background. Both cyanotypes are in excellent condition with no notable condition issues or imperfections with the exception of a few minor thin tears on the first cyanotype running from the left edge and top left corner which were repaired/secured with tape verso a very long time ago as well as a very small minor speck of discoloration in the rocks along the bottom left edge which appears to be as made. This pair was purchased from Bill Utley many years ago who as an avid fan of Curtis works I can't thank enough for not only allowing me to appreciate the works he passed along for me to enjoy but the fascinating information he shared about the time he was fortunate enough to spend with his former neighbors Manford "Mag" and Beth (nee Curtis) Magnuson. As a collector of works by Curtis I found this pair of cyanotypes to be very interesting because the sequence gives an in-depth sort of behind the scenes look at Curtis and his crew at work. This pair of cyanotypes was offered as passed Lot 302 in Swann Galleries Sale 2370 in 2014.Each cyanotype is temporarily mounted with archival polypropylene on a 10" x 8" board and under a mat both of acid-free 4-ply 100% cotton rag museum board. Both cyanotypes have been properly stored and have apparently suffered no significant fading due to past exposure to UV light. This pair will be shipped fully insured, securely packed and in a manner which prevents being bent during transit.
