NOTE : the “Neil Armstrong” on the bag is just a note from our friend as a reminder to himself about who was on the mission/capsule. This isnota note written by Neil Armstrong. But Armstrong was on the Gemini 8 as his first space mission.

These are small pieces. Presumably from the ??heat shield?? but I don’t know.

The brown pieces feels a little rubbery and the white ones like hard foam. The white pieces are delicate but not super crumbly. Just be careful w them or they will break off pieces. The brown pieces seem more durable but I didn’t apply much pressure to them to test it.

This has been in a friend’s family since he was a boy. His dad/family was stationed in Japan when the Gemini splashed down off the coast and through military contacts they ended up w a souvenir. (I can probably get you some proof of the station if you would like.)

These pieces are small. Take a look at the photos. They’re about 1-1.5 cm each.

I will include all the notes and packaging/wrapping included in the photos. (Not the ruler, haha!)

Gemini 8(officiallyGemini VIII)[2]was the sixth crewed spaceflight inNASA'sGeminiprogram. ....It was decided to let the spacecraft reenter one orbit later so that it could land in a place that could be reached by secondary recovery forces. The original plan was for Gemini 8 to land in the Atlantic, but that was supposed to be three days later.USSLeonard F. Masonstarted to steam towards the new landing site 800 kilometers (430nmi; 500mi) east ofOkinawaand 1,000 kilometers (540nmi; 620mi) south ofYokosuka, Japan.

Reentry took place over China, out of range of NASA tracking stations.

Planes were also dispatched, andU.S. Air ForcepilotLes Schneiderspotted the spacecraft as it descended precisely on time and on target. Three pararescuers jumped from theirC-54and attached a flotation collar to the capsule.[12]

All of the pararescuers and astronauts suffered from seasickness. Three hours after splashdown,Leonard F. Masonhad both men and the spacecraft on board. The astronauts were exhausted, but had otherwise survived the flight and their time on the water in good condition. They were briefly checked and slept for nine hours.

The next morning, the ship docked at the port ofNaha. Fellow astronautWalter Schirraand other NASA officials flew in to greet them before the astronauts were summoned back to the ship for medical tests and debriefing. After release, they were brought by limousine to waiting helicopters where they flew toKadena Air Baseand then on to Florida on aC-135.[13]
