The monarch pens this letter on the first day of the New Year, 1798
Autograph Letter Signed: "Frederic Guillaume" ¼p, 7½x9½. Berlin, January 1, 1798. In French, translated in part: "I haven't received without interest the work that you just sent me… ". FREDERICK WILLIAM III (1770-1840) became King of Prussia in 1797, reigning until his death. The early years of his reign were dominated by the politics of the Napoleonic Wars, with King Frederick William trying unsuccessfully to keep Prussia neutral, only to be crushingly defeated by Napoleon at Jena (1806). Re-entering the struggle after an alliance with Russia and Austria (1813), Prussian troops helped defeat Napoleon and restore the Bourbon monarchy in France, reaffirming that result with the victory at Waterloo (1815). Initially reform-minded, the King became increasingly autocratic in his later years, abandoning his promise to create a Prussian constitution. Toned. Sparse staining throughout, most of which is concentrated at edges. Vertical and horizontal folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
