For your consideration is an original Christmas and New Year greeting card, dated circa 1941, personally inscribed and signed in ink by Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Princess Margaret. Addressed in manuscript To Mr. Stone & Miss Vidal, and signed from Elizabeth & Margaret, this card represents a scarce and well-preserved example of early dual-signed royal correspondence from the sisters during their youth. The handwriting is consistent with their respective ages at the timePrincess Elizabeth aged fifteen and Princess Margaret aged elevenmaking this an authentic pre-accession autograph from the future sovereign.
The card measures approximately 5.5 x 4.5 inches and was produced by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., London and New York, as indicated on the reverse. The front features a color illustration of four terrier-type dogs nestled together in a wicker basket beneath a tartan blanket, captioned To Greet You. The interior bears the printed seasonal greeting, With Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year, above which appears the handwritten dedication and the manuscript signatures in dark fountain pen ink. The signatures are clear and legible, displaying the natural youthful characteristics expected of the period.
The historical context significantly enhances the importance of this piece. Circa 1941 places the card during the height of the Second World War, when Britain was enduring the Blitz and national uncertainty. Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret were residing at Windsor Castle for security, while their parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, remained active in London as symbols of national resolve. In 1940, Princess Elizabeth delivered her first wartime broadcast to evacuated children, marking the beginning of her public service. Material signed during this early wartime period is materially scarcer than the later regnal Christmas cards issued after Elizabeths accession in 1952.
In terms of rarity, early childhood signatures of Princess Elizabeth are considerably less common than examples from her reign, and dual-signed cards with Princess Margaret from the 19401942 period are encountered infrequently. The use of the simple pre-regnal signature Elizabeth, rather than the later constitutional form Elizabeth R, firmly situates the card within her formative years. The card remains in original condition, showing only minor age-related handling consistent with period ephemera. It constitutes a professionally desirable and historically grounded example of early royal autograph material from a defining era in modern British history.
