Up for sale is this rare Jean-Pierre D’antan (1800-1869) French solid bronze statuette of the face of famous Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce De León, on a “leon” or lion body.

Piece has fantastic detail in Ponce de León’s face and we know it’s León not just because of his pronounced face but also because he is on a lion’s or “leon” body, one of Dantan’s signature styles. This one is signed D’antan Je and dated 1831 and underneath has a foundry mark and perhaps from Francois Joseph Bosio’s Studio, where D’antan and his brother entered, or a later original recast. The mark looks like “AFP 67”

Such an extraordinary piece of work from a highly sought French portrait sculptor. Known as “D’antan the Younger,” and coming from a family of famous artists, he is often attributed with the creation of the sculptural caricature art genre.

Most of his works are in museums throughout the world and private collections.

This is a truly a scarce work of history and art! I have not seen another like it come up for sale.

Measures 3.8” inches tall, 3” inches long and 2” inches wide (9.7 cm, 7.6 cm, 5.1 cm).

Would make a fantastic display piece, museum quality addition to a collection, or a great gift!
