NAMPEYO OF HANO (1859-1942):

Nampeyo of Hano was an incredibly famous Hopi-Tewa artist. She revived ancient Hopi pottery styles and saved the traditional art form from fading away. She learned to make pots as a young girl and is widely known as a matriarch of Southwest Native American art.
This late 19th C yellow-slip pottery bowl is unsigned which is typical of her pieces. Classic Nampeyo of Hano signature touches throughout such as thick rim painted red, eagle tail designs, framing lines with spirit break, stippling and those neat dots with “whiskers” on the handles.
