This late 1700s or early 1800smagnificent antiquecarved cherub with wings and was purchased from a fine estate sale. The carved detail is amazing from the chubby cherubic hands and feet to the eyes, nose and mouth. She even displays finely carved teeth.This is a wall hanging that possibly hung in a Church or Cathedral. It is very very large being 33" tall and very heavy. The back (which wont show when hung) has some splits where it was possibly taken off the wall or some architecture in the Church during renovation.As soon as I saw it, it took my breath away. It looks like it belongs in the Vatican so fine is this work of art. The original paint has been preserved with a coat of clear varnish and the artistry and pastel colors shine through as well as the original aged patina. This is an important piece for connoisseursof fine art and objects. It has a wire on the back so that it can be hung.The cherub holds a golden cornucopia which may have held a Flag of some kind. Also, there is a compartment in the swirling cloud it is flying on that may have been used for holy water.
This carved cherub figurehead is a completely authentic antique and a rarelarge size (33" long) carved expertly and original paint .The detail on this item is spectacular with carved teeth, eyes, hair...chubby cherubic arms and legs. These are so so rare in thislarger size...a small one sold recently for $110,000 at sale...I couldnt find another example of a Botticelli type of cherub. This one holds a cornucopia.
