Rare Vintage African Namji Dowayo War Shield, Cameroon 48”Tall Jim Willis:

Large African war/ceremonial shield, attributed to the Namji (Dowayo) people of Cameroon, standing approximately 48 inches tall. Hand-bound reed/wicker construction over a wood frame, with an aged leather rim binding and carrying handle to the reverse.

Provenance:

This piece carries its original consignment tag reading "Cameroon a/98 — per Jim Willis," indicating the attribution/identification on this piece was made by Jim Willis rather than reflecting a documented chain of ownership through his gallery. James "Jim" Willis (1934–2019) was one of the most respected American dealers in African, Oceanic, and Indonesian tribal art, operating his San Francisco gallery for over 45 years and later dealing privately from Russian Hill; he received the ATADA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. The accompanying tag/paperwork notes a date around 1998, with a period valuation noted at that time.

Condition:

Attractive aged surface patina consistent with age and use. Some expected wear, loosening, and minor losses to the reed binding as shown in photos — please review all images closely, as they are part of the description. Sold as-is.
