I bought this copy of Zap Comix #1 at a newsstand on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley in 1967, and I've had it ever since. In the '80s, R. Crumb and I were buddies when we both lived in Winters, CA, during which time he signed the front cover for me in the lower right hand corner. A first-printing copy of Zap #1, printed by Charles Plymell, is very hard to find -- somewhere between 1,500 and 3,000 copies were printed (accounts vary). Five hundred copies were destroyed in a fire, and no doubt many others were read and discarded. So, more than 50 years later, there aren't many of these floating around. In May 2010, a very clean, unsigned first-printing copy sold for $26,900. The copy you see here is well-thumbed -- if you're looking for a mint or near mint copy this isn't it. But it is a rare first printing, it is all intact, and -- most unusual of all -- it is signed by R. Crumb.
