1914 – 15Star named 2840 PTE S. SANDERSON. 19/BN A.I.F.; Memorial Plaque named NORMANSANDERSON in wax card of issue. They come with copies of service recordextracts and war diary extract.

Norman Sanderson wasborn in Darlinghurst, N.S.W. in 1894. A modeler by trade, he enlisted into the6th Reinforcements, 19th Battalion on 12/7/1915. He departed from Australiabound for Egypt on 2/11/1915 landing in time to qualify for the star.

He marched into the 4thBattalion on 14/2/1916 at Tel-el-Kebir. He proceeded to France with thebattalion landing on 30/3/1916.

As part of the 4thBattalion, he took part in the attack at Pozieres on the 23rd July 1916, thebattalion took its objectives however the Germans commenced to shell thebattalion position with 5.9 inch (150mm) and 4.2 inch (105mm) guns, causingcasualties as well as numerous cases of shell shock due to the intensity. Hewas evacuated on 25/7/1916 with shell shock and an injured back.

He rejoined thebattalion on 29/9/1916 and was killed in action on 31/10/1916 by Germanshellfire whilst the battalion was holding Delville Wood, Somme. He is buriedat Dantzig Alley British Cemetery.
